On the Kapuzinerberg – Ukrainian refugees have to leave the monastery

Date:

The Capuchin order in the city of Salzburg gets new brothers, the space on the old city hill is running out. That is why war refugees from the Ukraine who have been housed there now have to look for a new place to stay.

Almost ten months ago, 16 war refugees from the Ukraine found shelter above the roofs of the city of Salzburg. The Salzburg Capuchin monks sheltered women and children who had fled in their monastery on the mountain of the same name, reports the “Krone”. But now the remaining Ukrainians have to leave.

Monks have been praying and working on the Altstadt-Berg for more than 400 years. Brother Hans Pruckner (53) leads the monastery, Brother Eckehart is 86, Karl over 70. For a long time the Salzburg Capuchins were plagued by worries about the future. Over the years, the Salzburg Order has shrunk and become obsolete. Now there are offspring: in February, nine new capuchins are moving up the mountain. The future of the monks in Salzburg seems safe.

Only a temporary solution for Ukrainians
But there are question marks over the future of Ukrainian refugees. “In the beginning we didn’t want to take in so many refugees. We didn’t have the space,” says Brother Hans. For him and the monks, however, the suffering of the people prevailed. They had to take action, together with the association “Ucreate Peace” they took care of the well-being of the refugees last year. However, it was clear from the start that it could only be a temporary solution for the uprooted Ukrainians. “By February 1, we want to have found apartments for the nine women and children who are still there,” explains the Kapuziner boss. Finding a new place to live, be it a studio apartment or a larger apartment for several people, is almost impossible.

One case has already succeeded: a young refugee moved from the monastery to her own apartment in Salzburg-Schallmoos at the beginning of this year. Nine others are still looking for their own four walls in Salzburg and the surrounding area.
