After terrorist attack: – Two more wounded by gunfire in Jerusalem

Date:

Hours after a terrorist attack on visitors to a synagogue in an Israeli settlement in East Jerusalem that killed seven people on Friday evening, two people were wounded by gunfire near the Old City on Saturday morning. An ambulance called in.

An emergency call at 10:42 a.m. (9:42 a.m. CET) mentioned a terrorist attack in the Silwan district in the eastern part of the Israeli-annexed city, Israel’s aid organization Magen David Adom said. Accordingly, there were “two injured at the scene”.

Seven killed in attack on synagogue
In the attack on Friday, a man opened fire on people attending evening prayers as they left the synagogue in the eastern district of Neve Yaakov. Seven people were killed and three others injured. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu had announced “immediate countermeasures” after the attack.

The security cabinet will meet on Saturday evening to discuss the consequences, the head of government announced on Israeli television. The alleged killer is said to be a 21-year-old Palestinian living in East Jerusalem. According to police, he was shot when he tried to escape.

Rockets fired at Israel
Allied militant groups from the Gaza Strip fired at least seven rockets into Israel on Friday evening. Israeli warplanes then destroyed, among other things, an underground missile production facility in the coastal enclave.

Today, more than 600,000 Israeli settlers live in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. Israeli settlement activities are seen by large parts of the world community as a flagrant violation of current international law. The Palestinians claim the territories for an independent state of Palestine with the Arab-influenced eastern part of Jerusalem as its capital.

The spiral of violence is fueling fears of a further escalation of the already tense security situation in the Middle East.
