An extremely wild incident has caused a stir in the US state of Georgia: a man stole a police car whose owner was conducting a traffic check. The thief sped off with flashing blue lights until the vehicle overturned and landed on the train tracks. Officers were able to get the victim out of the car just in time and to safety.
Chances make thieves, as the saying goes – but stealing a cop car because the opportunity presents itself is probably the dumbest idea imaginable. A behaviorally original Atlanta man nearly paid with his life for this foolish act on Saturday. When a police officer was doing a traffic check around 2 a.m., the 29-year-old crook simply got into his unattended car — and accelerated with the blue lights on.
“Someone just got into my patrol car,” the robbed police officer can be heard saying in his bodycam recording as he warns his colleagues (see video above). The director also uses a helicopter to give chase – and then the whole incident becomes even more dramatic.
Police officers save thief from approaching train
Because the thief lost control of the wheel while fleeing, it overturned and ended up on the train tracks. The next train on its way to the scene of the accident was not long in coming. “She[de politie]just went straight into rescue mode where they had to get this guy out of the car and off this train,” a sergeant told FOX.
“This incident could have ended differently”
The thief suffered only minor injuries and is now in jail on charges of theft, escape, reckless driving, obstruction and damage to city property. The management was relieved that the incident had gone relatively smoothly. “We are very proud of the reaction of the officers, this incident could have turned out differently,” said Sergeant John Chafee. “It could have ended up with that person being seriously injured by that train — it didn’t look like he would be able to get out on his own.”
The car thief’s motive is unclear
It is unclear why the 29-year-old stole the police car. In any case, he was not involved in the traffic control that the local police officer had carried out in the patrol car at the time of the crime.
