A loud bang woke up a couple (41 and 38 years old) at 01:00 on Thursday in Walding in Upper Austria. There was also a strong smell of smoke in the air. The 41-year-old then looked outside and saw that a fire had broken out in his carport in front of the house. The building, two cars and a scooter were on fire.
The couple immediately woke up their 9-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter and then took them to neighbors for safety. The Walding and Ottensheim fire brigade deployed a total of 65 volunteers to extinguish the fire, but this was made more difficult by a gas bottle that had to be brought to safety.
Refrigerated container requested
Among the burning vehicles was an electric car from Seat, which the fire brigade was able to extinguish. “Fortunately, the battery itself did not start to burn yet. However, we had to request a container from Steyr in which the car was temporarily stored for 72 hours, because the battery could catch fire at any time,” says Christian Bergmayr, commander of the Ottensheim fire brigade. The vehicles are a total loss, the cause of the fire is unclear.
