New details about Saturday afternoon’s avalanche in Schmirn, Tyrol: The victim hit by the snow masses is a 33-year-old Czech. He was torn down 300 meters – an avalanche airbag should have prevented worse.
The 33-year-old was part of a group of four Czech tourers. The man and three women had taken a ski trip to the Hohe Warte (2,687 meters) in the direction of the Wildlahnertal. Just before 3.30 pm, the 33-year-old was the first to enter the valley.
And then it happened: It caused a slab avalanche and was then swept down about 1,000 feet. “The man managed to activate his avalanche airbag, which kept him on the surface,” police said.
Helicopter to the clinic
The Czech was buried only “slightly”. However, he suffered serious injuries. He was rescued by the emergency helicopter and then flown to the clinic in Innsbruck.
Avalanche warning level 2 on Sunday
On Sunday, Tyrol has a general avalanche warning level of 2 on the five-part scale – ie moderate danger. But: “Weak layers in the old snow can very occasionally be caused by individual winter sports enthusiasts, especially at transitions from little to a lot of snow, such as at the entrance to gullies and valleys and in rarely used touring terrain,” says the avalanche warning service.
The danger spots are rare, but hard to spot. There is a risk of falling on the hard snow surface on the steep terrain.
