Numerous fatalities – Video shows deadly mining accident in China

Date:

A serious mining accident in northern China last week has local emergency services on their toes. At least six people have already been found dead and about 50 other people are missing. A video now shows with what force the masses of earth slid into the valley.

Rescue work at the coal mine in Inner Mongolia continues – about 900 rescue workers are at the scene of the accident, according to state media. However, another “massive landslide” then occurred at the well, forcing a brief interruption of rescue work.

Pile of rubble 80 meters high
Police told state broadcaster CCTV that an investigation into the causes of the landslide is ongoing – the landslide created a pile of debris about 500 meters in diameter and estimated to be 80 meters high. The rescue work should therefore be difficult.

The mines in China’s Inner Mongolia are among the largest coal producers in the country. Chinese mines have also been trying to increase production over the past year to increase supply and lower prices.

Such accidents are not uncommon in China: in December 2020, 23 miners died after a carbon monoxide leak in a coal mine. And in January 2021, 10 miners died in an explosion at a gold mine in Shandong province.
