Conference in India – “We want to end the war” – the audience laughs at Lavrov

Date:

At a conference in New Delhi, India, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov again tried to blame the West for the war in Ukraine – and was laughed at (see video above). The situation caused a great resonance in social networks – and sheds light on how Russian propaganda is perceived in other countries.

Asked about his country’s energy policy on Friday, Lavrov said: “You know, the war we are trying to end that has been started against us by using the Ukrainian people…”. He doesn’t get any further because the audience starts laughing.

War labeled as war
After the short pause this caused, he hesitantly added that the war had influenced Russian politics, including energy policy. Russia will never again depend on partners in the West. They prefer reliable partners in energy policy, certainly including India and China. It was remarkable that Lavrov described the war in this way. So far, the Kremlin has avoided this and speaks of a “military special operation”.

At the end of the 30-minute talk at the Raisina conference, the moderator bade Lavrov farewell and asked him if he could promise that the next talk would take place in less dangerous times. “The Americans will certainly suggest some questions you can use,” Lavrov said, standing up and laughing as he walked off stage. Organized by a think tank and the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, the multilateral geopolitical and economic conference is held annually in New Delhi.

“Hilarious and Embarrassing”
The laughter at Lavrov’s performance caused a great resonance on social networks. Lavrov becomes a joke, the world power is simply laughed at, it must be embarrassing, according to various reactions. “This is hilarious. And embarrassing,” Russian economist Konstantin Sonin responded on Twitter. “Russian ‘diplomats’ think the lies they feed Putin’s fantasies to promote could be perceived by others as something other than lies,” wrote he (see below).

India has strong economic and military ties with Russia and wants to remain neutral. Much of the equipment of the Indian Armed Forces comes from Russia. Recently, the South Asian country with the second largest population after China abstained from a UN General Assembly vote on a resolution marking the first anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The resolution contains the demand for peace and Moscow’s withdrawal.
