Alarm and smoke development At the University Library in Graz, 350 people had to be evacuated from the entire building on Wednesday afternoon. Luckily the fire department was planned…
Deafening noise in the University Library of Graz on Wednesday around 3 p.m.: the alarm had gone off. In front of the building with the well-known glass cantilever, in which several hundred students sit over their books every day, there are 20 firefighters, some with heavy respiratory protection.
Smoke in the seminar room
All of them – a total of 350 people, including staff – must be evacuated as soon as possible, including in the adjacent building that houses the studies department. Heavy smoke has formed in a seminar room. A technical defect may have caused a fire.
Fortunately, that day is just the scenario of a large-scale exercise that was planned and carried out by the Graz Volunteer Fire Brigade and the Graz University Internal Fire Service. This has been tested for the first time to be well prepared in case of an emergency. They also practiced bringing a lady in a wheelchair to safety with a special stretcher. The evacuated people hopped in front of the library.
The exercise went well and a little later the students were able to return to their study places.
