The Higher Regional Court overturned the first conviction due to formal errors. That is why a pensioner (80) from Nussdorf took place again on Wednesday in the dock of the Salzburg regional court. Charge: animal cruelty.
A witness accused the man of shooting birds with an air rifle several times in 2022. A blackbird – presumed dead – landed right next to him in the street.
“That’s a lie. I’m a big bird lover, I’ve even built nesting boxes,” replied the retired gardener. The enthusiastic hunter explained that he had only fired at a box in the yard.
Even after the judge offered to drop the case in exchange for taking responsibility, the man vehemently insisted on his innocence. The non-final verdict: 1560 euro fine. Another 780 euros were checked conditionally. In the first trial, it had imposed a suspended sentence.
