A 44-year-old Viennese fell into mountain distress on the southern Schneeberg on Saturday evening. The man is said to have consistently followed a hiking app on his mobile phone and overlooked several warning signs.
While descending from the Fischerhütte, the Viennese lost its orientation in the falling dark and alerted the emergency services.
Man located, recovery not possible for the time being
A Ministry of Interior helicopter was able to locate the missing person, but was unable to rescue him due to the dense forest. The 44-year-old was eventually found by a team from the Reichenau mountain rescue service and escorted unharmed to the valley in an hour and a half. The mountain rescue service advises hikers not to rely solely on digital apps, but also to bring an analog hiking map and keep an eye on the markings on the hiking trails.
