It will start again no later than Pentecost: towel parade! The run on sun loungers at swimming pools in various holiday destinations has started. “Typical German”? Not really: this awakens the animal in all of us. What can such a towel do? We researched it for “World Towel Day”.
What is the most useful thing to take with you when traveling through space? Yes, a towel. We’ve known this since 1979, when Douglas Adams’ novel The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy was published. The British author shows very nicely what various advantages such a piece of fabric can have: from the food depot to the robot chain.
You can think of it however you like: in honor of Adams, the “World Towel Day” is celebrated annually on May 25, ie today – with fans around the world wrapped accordingly.
But the towel doesn’t just thrive on intergalactic hitchhikers: it’s also very popular with Earth vacationers. Certainly also for drying off, but especially as a miracle weapon at the hotel pool: because sun loungers must be reserved. Regardless of whether you use them or not.
At least that seems like an unwritten law – if you look at various social media footage: the supposedly relaxation-loving people run to the sun loungers, throwing away their hand and bath towels, as if they are just avoiding the end of their vacation.
