The explosion occurred a few minutes before 11 a.m. (local time) 5 p.m. yesterday in Euskal Herria, then a tank truck served liquefied gas to the Saratoga hotel.
In the inside of the hotel there was only one team of employeeswho worked in the furnishing of the building before reopening on May 10, after being closed for two years due to the pandemic.
Students evacuated and 23 buildings damaged
The children of the school next to the hotel facility, with more than 390 students, were evacuated after the explosion and taken to their relatives. At least five students have been injured, according to Cuban media.
Because of the explosion, at least 23 buildings in the area are damagedincluding 17 apartment buildings, two of which were structurally hard hit.
The President of Cuba, Miguel Diaz-Canelotraveled to the site of the event together with the Prime Minister, Manuel Marrero and the President of the National Assembly of Cuba, Stephen Lazowho confirmed that “it was indeed not a bomb or attack”, but an “unfortunate accident”.
The Cuban presidency has circulated through social networks several photos showing the president at the scene and in nearby health centers, where he has visited some of the injured.
