Shortage of doctors, endless waiting times – the precarious situation in local hospitals also demands a lot from patients and relatives. Some are so aggressive that they cross all boundaries. An insight into how that is received on the other side.
Both patients and medical staff suffer from the hospital misery. However, there is one problem that only makes life difficult for hospital staff: increasing aggression from relatives and patients. In a Viennese hospital, Bettina Koch is given the special assignment to defuse such conflicts.
“crown”: As a clinical risk manager you are responsible for conflicts in the hospital. Is such a post necessary because standards have risen or because the problems have increased?
Bettina Cook: I would say both. We are in line with international high safety targets, but complaint management has increased enormously. I came back from Saudi Arabia in 2017 and I thought to myself, that’s just the Austrian mentality – you immediately get upset. Then came Corona and somehow people got stuck in the state of emergency. They immediately go on the offensive and are really only closest to themselves, coming in and wanting to be treated now and right away. Selfishness is very strong.
