The UN warns of the impact of the floods on access to drinking water in the area, as “thousands of people depend on the Kajovka reservoir for drinking water and the level is falling rapidly”.
Rescue services have evacuated more than 2,000 people from the areas affected by the destruction of the Nova Kajovka dam (60 kilometers from Kherson, in the south of the country), the overflow of which has flooded some 600 square kilometers, as announced today by the Ukrainian Military Administration of the area.
The head of the entity has explained that the average water level in the part of the Dnieper River south of the dam is 5.61 meters.

The Dnieper River cuts the Kherson province in two. The Nova Kakhovka hydroelectric power station, of which the destroyed dam was a part, was on the eastern bank of the river and was therefore under Russian control. Both Ukraine and Russia blame each other for the destruction of the dam. The United Nations has indicated that access to drinking water is “one of the main concerns” after the floods caused by the destruction of the dam.
“Thousands of people depend on the Kajovka reservoir to drink water and the level is falling rapidly,” said spokesman for UN Secretary-General Stéphane Dujarric, who stressed that “flooding can also lead to pollution of water resourceswhich obviously has a negative impact on health.”
Dujarric detailed that the United Nations sent about 12,000 bottles of water, more than 1,700 packages of essential supplies for children on the run, and 10,000 purification tablets to five locations in Kherson and the city of Mikolaiv.
The spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General has indicated that the operations are taking place “in the areas of Ukraine which are still under the control of the government of Ukraine”, although he has emphasized that the body is “reaching the areas of Ukraine under Russian control”.
