The resignation of Johnson and his allies forces three by-elections in the United Kingdom

Date:

Along with the former prime minister, two of his allies have stepped down from acting as deputies: Nadine Dorries and Nigel Adams.

The dismissal of Boris Johnson and two of his closest allies as MPs will force three UK by-elections to take their seats in the House of Commons. These votes will be a test for the Prime Minister Rishi Sunak at a time when the Labor Party is leading the polls, although they pose no threat to the broad parliamentary majority they have held since the 2019 general election.

This new crisis for the Conservative Party has been triggered by the investigation into whether Johnson lied to Parliament about the parties in Downing Street during the pandemic.

Before the Committee on Privileges has published its conclusions on this matter, Johnson announced his immediate resignation on Friday. understanding that this body was preparing to recommend his suspension as deputy.

Sunak is forced to summon a general before January 2025but elections are expected to take place in the second half of 2024.

The Conservatives have been punished over the past year by both the scandals that forced Johnson’s resignation and Liz Truss’ failed government, which created a financial storm, and the latest YouGov poll predicted they would lose an election by a wide margin (25% of the vote, compared to 44% for Labour).
