Anxiety barometer – Integration creates care lines in Austria

Date:

A study asked about the top concerns of Ms. and Mr. Austrians – inflation and immigration are at the top.

Thousands of Turks celebrate their sultan’s victory in Ankara in Favorites and a young man calls for the storming of Vienna in a video – these are disturbing images. At the same time, politicians continue to talk about much-needed immigration for the labor market. But this explanation does not seem enough to the Austrians. That is the conclusion of the current integration barometer of the Austrian Integration Fund (ÖIF).

health and inflation
Concerns about “bottlenecks in care and nursing” or “the high tax burden” have replaced the topic of “integration of refugees and immigrants” at the top of the rankings. However, the topic of immigration and integration itself is omnipresent – for example, the top 10 biggest “guards” (see chart) include “fear of the spread of political Islam”, “conflicts between migrant groups” or “another refugee crisis such as in 2015”.

Cohabitation is viewed critically
Living together with refugees and immigrants is also still experienced as negative: 61 percent rate each of these topics as fairly or very bad, and 65 percent think living with Muslims is even very or fairly bad. Problems are mainly observed on public streets and squares, but also in residential areas.

Austrians expect knowledge of German and employment
From a population point of view, the top three challenges in living with immigrants and refugees are cultural or linguistic differences (55 percent), problematic attitudes towards women (55 percent) and, in some cases, insufficient willingness to integrate (51 percent). per cent). So anyone who talks about qualified immigration should not ignore these problems either.
