Refugee crisis – war, violence: the situation is becoming increasingly hopeless

Date:

More people than ever are on the run. This leads to tragedies like the one in Greece. The situation is becoming increasingly hopeless.

A tragedy has unfolded in the Mediterranean. A boat leaving Libya with some 600 refugees on board capsized. About 100 survived, 78 dead have been recovered so far.

Mediterranean becomes a grave
For hundreds, the Mediterranean becomes a grave. Including more than 100 children. Caritas Vienna director Klaus Schwertner reacted to the boat accident with sharp criticism of European refugee policy. “Europe has been failing for years when it comes to protecting fleeing people. Since 2014, more than 20,000 refugees have drowned as they fled the Mediterranean.”

People seeking protection are increasingly becoming victims of violence
According to the UN refugee agency UNHCR, more people are fleeing than ever before. Worldwide, 110 million people have been driven from their homes. According to the UNHCR, the reasons for fleeing are war, violence and persecution. According to the Ministry of the Interior, there are about 100,000 refugees in Austria.

Measured by the number of inhabitants, most refugees live in Lebanon. About 1.5 million people are cared for in the state of 6 million people. But the country is going through a serious economic and political crisis. “The past two years have been bad,” Marcelo Fernandez, head of Doctors Without Borders, told the “Krone” in Lebanon.

The domestic political crisis deepened. For the twelfth time that the presidential election failed on Wednesday, angry protesters attacked banks yesterday. And who do you blame? “The refugees,” says Fernandez. “The rhetoric against those seeking protection is on the rise.”

Deportations are on the rise
These are scared. Deportations are on the rise. “Many are afraid to leave the camps, they miss doctor’s appointments because they are afraid of violence – or that they will be deported.” In addition, epidemics such as cholera are prevalent. With the collapse of civil society due to the crisis, twice as many Lebanese have to turn to MSF for help. Because otherwise they would not have affordable access to medical care. 40 percent of healthcare professionals have left the country since 2019.

Escape has many causes. One thing is the same everywhere: desperation! Such desperation that you risk your life and that of your children at a crossing point in an overcrowded, rickety barge on the Mediterranean.
