Several participants and two police officers were injured late Friday evening in Essen in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia in a mass brawl between at least 80 people. A police spokesperson said on Saturday that several people had been taken to hospitals. The police had been deployed with a “larger contingent” and a helicopter. It is still unclear how many people were injured in the alleged “clan crime conflict”.
The fight broke out around 9:30 p.m. in front of a restaurant. According to the information, several spectators have joined, making the last 113 people on the scene. Iron bars and knives were later found at the scene of the brawl. The police kept watch until well after midnight. “exploratory measures” are currently underway to find out whether another argument could arise on Saturday, the spokesman said.
Connection to second brawl under investigation
Police are also investigating whether there was any connection to a multiple-injury brawl in Castrop-Rauxel, some 30 kilometers away, that also took place Friday night. At the moment, however, the personal details of those involved in the fight in Essen have yet to be determined, according to the spokesperson.
