Austria was hit by extreme weather on Wednesday. Bad weather conditions prevailed in Carinthia, Styria and Tyrol in particular. The states had to contend with hailstones up to 5 centimeters in size, rain showers and strong gusts of wind. The fire service worked tirelessly. The effects will also be clearly visible in the coming days.
It took a long time before the first warm day, a day with more than 30 degrees Celsius, became a reality. Then it was Sunday. But with the first heat wave that followed, there was also the chance of severe weather, the severe weather forecast of the meteorologists.
Tyrol made the start – it started with heavy rain, followed closely by hailstones the size of table tennis balls. Then it rained again. For example, storm gusts of up to 85 km/h were measured in Innsbruck. Fortunately, the fire service’s actions were reasonably manageable. Fallen trees were cleared and a flooded underground car park was pumped empty.
35 firefighting operations in Styria
In Styria, the firefighters were called up for a total of 35 missions. In addition to fallen trees on traffic routes and vehicles, firefighters pumped out flooded basements and covered hail-damaged roofs with tarpaulins. Rubble information on the B 75 between Donnersbach and Donnersbachwald was also removed over a length of 200 metres.
Mudslides and road closures in Carinthia
Upper Carinthia was particularly hard hit. There, too, a violent storm raged that led to numerous firefighters’ actions. The Spittal district was particularly affected: according to the police, hailstones up to eight centimeters in size and fallen trees caused disabilities. In the Liezen district, the fire brigade was deployed because of uprooted trees and covered roofs.
On the Rennweg in Carinthia, a mudslide went over the L19 at 5:35 p.m. Residents and the crew of a police patrol were trapped between several streams of debris, the L19 was no longer passable. A mudslide also went through Katschberg Straße (B99) in St. Nikolai, where the sliding door of a bus was destroyed by a stone, no one was injured. In Kremsbrücke, two houses were badly damaged and a car was almost completely buried by a mudslide. Roads in the storm area remained closed and the closure is expected to last until Thursday morning.
