Ukraine has been defending itself against Putin’s invading forces for 16 months. A significant amount of Russian war equipment was captured during this period – photos of Ukrainian peasants towing tanks went around the world. Among the loot were dozens of 60-year-old T-62 tanks, which Russia had hastily removed from its depots after suffering heavy losses in the early days of the war. We also show the full list of losses on both sides.
In total, the Ukrainian army – see the table below for the exact figures – captured more than 500 Russian tanks. Most were provisionally repaired and sent back into action. The Ukraine even uses very old models at the front – for example, modernized M-55S from Slovenia based on the Russian T-55.
But there are hesitations about the 45 T-62s taken from Russia last fall during fighting in southern Ukraine. Wrong caliber – 115mm ammunition is only available in Russia. The loot tanks are still not useless. Ukrainian mechanics build amazing “Frankenstein tanks” from them, the skills of which are much needed.
