The case of the school assistant from Somalia, who was thrown out of a swimming pool in Linz, is causing a stir. A broadcast of “Krone” in the leisure centers of Upper Austria shows: “Problem swimmers” are often young boys.
“Can the lifeguard throw my mother out too?” Questions like these kept schoolchildren busy after the incident, says Elke Aigner, general manager of SOS Human Rights. As reported, the association had raised the alarm about discrimination: a voluntary school assistant from Somalia, wearing a headscarf, was expelled from the Schörgenhubbad in Linz because – according to the operator Linz AG – she had been in the swimming area while wearing street clothes. According to the swimming regulations, this is prohibited and applies to everyone, regardless of origin.
