According to British intelligence, there is further evidence that Russian general Sergei Surovikin was silenced after the mutiny of Wagner’s private army. His deputy as head of the Russian air and space force, Viktor Afsalow, is increasingly coming into the public eye, the defense ministry said in London on Wednesday.
When Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov recently appeared on television for the first time since Wagner’s uprising on June 24, Afsalov informed him via a video message. Afsalov has been in office for at least four years, but this is probably his first public appearance with Gerasimov.
“Afsalov’s heightened public profile and Surovikin’s unclear whereabouts reinforce the hypothesis that Surovikin was sidelined after the mutiny.”
Surovikin hasn’t been seen since the mutiny. According to British assessments, he worked as a liaison between Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin and the Russian Defense Ministry.
Zelensky praises NATO summit results
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed the results of the NATO summit in Vilnius. However, it would have been ideal if NATO had formally invited Kiev to join. Meanwhile, the United States and Britain announced a joint statement by the heads of state and government of the G7 group of Western industrialized countries on long-term security commitments for Ukraine. Zelenskyj had also met bilaterally with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz (see video above).
