Poland summoned the Russian ambassador to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Warsaw on Saturday. Deputy Foreign Minister Pawel Jablonski said the convocation came after “provocative statements by Russian President Vladimir Putin, as well as threats and other unfriendly actions by the Russian Federation towards Poland and our allies”.
The borders between the countries are “absolutely inviolable and Poland is against any revision” of these borders. Putin on Friday accused Poland of having “revanchist plans” and wanting to retake territories in western Ukraine – a claim repeatedly made by Russian authorities. At a session of the National Security Council, Putin also insisted that the western regions of modern-day Poland were “a gift from Stalin” to the Poles after World War II.
Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki tweeted Friday night that “Stalin was a war criminal responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Poles” during and after World War II.
