82 people were arrested in a large-scale anti-mafia raid in the southern Italian Adriatic province of Foggia on Monday. During the search, weapons and drugs were seized, a so-called “game over”.
The members of three clans had reached an agreement to trade drugs – cocaine in particular – worth millions. The proceeds were used to financially support the activities of the clans and families of convicted mafiosi. A suspect is also suspected of extortion.
“Fighting the Mafia Priority”
Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi welcomed the raid. “With the full support of the government, the judiciary and police continue to achieve important results in enforcing legality and fighting the mafia across the country. The fight against the mafia is and will always be the priority of our government,” said the impartial interior minister.
“Bloody Mafia War”
The clans of the so-called mafia in Foggia faced off in a “bloody mafia war” for dominance and control over illegal businesses, police in the town, about 130 kilometers from Bari, said Monday. The clans control the drug trade from Albania and also earn millions from extortion.
