A Russian attack on the center of the northern Ukrainian city of Chernihiv on Saturday resulted in serious damage, deaths and numerous injuries. “A Russian missile landed right in the city center, in our Chernihiv,” President Volodymyr Zelensky told Telegram on Saturday. A square, the Polytechnic University and a theater were hit, resulting in deaths and injuries.
“An ordinary Saturday that turned Russia into a day of pain and loss,” Zelensky continued. The head of state released video from the site of the impact, which showed debris around a large Soviet-era building. Parked cars could be seen everywhere, their roofs and windows partially destroyed.
Five dead, dozens injured
Shortly afterwards, the Ukrainian Ministry of the Interior took the floor and announced concrete numbers of victims. Five people were killed in the attack and another 37 were injured. Eleven children were among the injured.
Residents must remain in shelters
The governor of the Chernihiv region of the same name, Vyacheslav Tschaus, had previously announced that the city was probably hit by a ballistic missile. He called on residents on Telegram to stay in shelters.
Chernihiv is located about 150 kilometers north of Kiev towards the border with Belarus, which is connected to Russia. Russian forces had marched through Chernihiv as they began their invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 and were subsequently pushed back by Ukrainian forces.
Northern Ukraine has been largely spared from war atrocities recently
Since Moscow’s troops were driven from the area, northern Ukraine had been largely spared from fierce fighting such as that in the east and south of the country.
