Amid the current heat wave in Switzerland, zero degrees have risen to a record high. This mark was measured for the first time since weather records began in 1954 at an altitude of 5298 meters. This surpassed last year’s record.
The MeteoSwiss weather service announced the new high on the internet service X, formerly known as Twitter. The zero degree limit was again higher than the highest point in the country, the Dufourspitze (4636 meters) in the Monte Rosa massif.
The previous record was 5,184 meters on July 25 last year, the weather bureau continues. The zero degree line is determined by measurements of weather balloons that take off twice a day from the municipality of Payerne in western Switzerland.
climate change as a cause
For example, the zero-degree limit “influences the development of vegetation, the snowfall limit and the water cycle, which means that it has a decisive influence on the habitats of humans, animals and plants,” says Meteoswiss. Therefore, it is an integral part of Alpine weather forecasting and plays “an important role in everyday life”. According to the weather service, the increase has accelerated significantly in some cases since 1970. The cause is therefore human-induced climate change.
Like many parts of Europe, Switzerland is currently experiencing a heat wave with temperatures well above 30 degrees in areas below 800 meters above sea level. The heat is expected to last through Thursday.
