Meteorologist Özden Terli has written an open letter to deniers of man-made climate change. In it he describes why ‘self-thinkers’ will have the shortest lever in history. Facts cannot be checked with one’s own mind.
The ZDF weather announcer opened with the words: “I am writing the following lines to an imaginary informant.”
Terli, who has long stopped talking about ‘good weather’ in his forecasts because of the climate crisis, is addressing not one person, but a social movement: climate deniers, who always support him because of his ‘commitment to preserving the foundations of our existence” would attack again.
Terli is strict against ‘self-thinkers’.
The climate expert notes that those ‘self-thinkers’ are always fooled by their own imagination: ‘Your inability to accept the facts is your problem and not humanity’s problem. And even if you don’t get it, the whole thing is so much bigger than your puny article about me and an alleged conspiracy.”

“Self-thinking fantasies” are just that: your own thinking. That would have little to do with solving the challenges of our time. “Even if you think you’re on to something exciting and you think you’re the next Einstein, you’re on the wrong track.”
And then Terli, who has moderated the weather for ZDF since 2013, becomes fundamental. It is a “futile attempt” to question global warming. “The longer you resist it, the more absurd your attempt to ignore this reality seems.” Facts cannot ‘take hold’. And the fact is that modern civilization is at risk of collapse – without appropriate climate protection measures.
Terli: Climate deniers are selling their children’s futures
“What you don’t understand, and what you understand even less, is that the window of opportunity is almost closed. Even slowing global warming, i.e. stopping the temperature rise, leaves a level that will not fall for millennia,” explains Terli, adding: “Get that!”
The problem has long been recognized and accepted worldwide. The era of fossil fuels would be coming to an end. ‘And you sit in your closet and think you can do something relevant with your puny articles? No you can not.”
The current question is whether the measures taken would be sufficient to prevent catastrophic overheating. Terli then accuses climate deniers of selling their “children and grandchildren.” “What for?” asks the meteorologist. The climate expert could never have imagined ‘that the train would move in such an anti-scientific direction’.
Terli, who on Thursday along with other scientists presented the 1 degree target for “a secure future”, concludes by saying: “This is very bitter and worrying, because when the scientific facts are put in order, climate protection is sabotaged and ignored. that is our democracy in danger.”
