A few days after the crash of the Russian space probe “Luna-25”, which crashed on the lunar surface, India is another country that is trying to land gently on the moon. So far, the mission is “going according to plan,” the Indian space agency ISRO wrote on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday.
The landing of “Chandrayaan-3” is scheduled for Wednesday 14:34 CEST. However, the landing date can still be postponed at short notice if the prevailing conditions on the Earth satellite are not sufficiently safe.
“Chandrayaan-3” was launched in mid-July. So far, only the US, the Soviet Union and China have managed to make a soft landing. “Chandrayaan” means “lunar vehicle” in Sanskrit. With the unmanned mission, India wants to spend about two weeks exploring the southern side of the moon, which has hardly been studied.
First Indian attempt failed
A first attempt failed in 2019. During the mission, the landing module crashed on the lunar surface. The space agency later told parliament in New Delhi that there were problems with braking while approaching the moon.
