About 100,000 people have been brought to safety in eastern Pakistan after severe flooding. Hundreds of villages and thousands of hectares of farmland in Punjab province are under water, authorities said on Wednesday. The provincial government blames neighboring India for the floods.
After heavy monsoon rains, authorities there diverted water from the retention zones to the Sutlej River, which then overflowed its banks on the Pakistani side.
On roads the water is 1.5 meters high
The water is more than five feet high in the streets, says Muhammad Amin, a doctor at a shelter. “The only access road is under water”. People could only come to the camp by boat.
Indian authorities were not immediately available for comment. But India regularly drains excess water in rivers to Pakistan. There, civil defense warned of further monsoon rains, which could exacerbate the situation in Punjab.
Flooding and landslides have killed at least 175 people in Pakistan since the rainy season began in late June. Last year, nearly a third of the country was inundated after severe flooding, affecting more than 33 million people. Climate change is making seasonal rains more intense and unpredictable, experts say.
