The abuse scandal involving a kindergarten teacher in Penzing is now also prompting political action. The People’s Party speaks of an “incredible political, but also official cover-up scandal that requires immediate consequences,” state party chairman Karl Mahrer said in a broadcast. He also criticized the responsible councilor Christoph Wiederkehr (NEOS) for having been informed of the incident only at a late stage: “Apparently the municipality is not the head of its own department,” says Mahrer. The liberals are outraged that the parents would have been given a “muzzle”.
The accusation weighs heavily: a teacher at a municipal kindergarten allegedly violated his protégés. But emotions also run high due to the actions of the authorities. The parents were not informed until 13 months later. The return was only announced a few days ago. “We have only known for two days. At MA 10 there is a need for an explanation,” says a spokesperson for the Municipal Council for Education.
ÖVP: The cause must be fully clarified
“Certainly with such a very sensitive issue, children and parents cannot and should not be treated in such a way,” said VP education spokesman Harald Zierfuss about the incident. The Vienna People’s Party announced a written request in this regard and a special meeting of the Education Committee. “This cause needs to be fully clarified. It is unacceptable that children and parents are simply left in the dark for years due to a blatant failure of the authorities,” said the VP politicians.
No suspension: “Incomprehensible” for the FPÖ
The Freedomists also disapprove of the way in which the case was handled. It is sad enough that such incidents occur in a kindergarten at all, that the parents and children “But if you still have a muzzle, the bottom will pop out of the barrel,” says FP education spokesman Maximilian Krauss. That the suspected employee has not been suspended, but only transferred, is incomprehensible to the PVV.
