During his trip to Ukraine, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed optimism about the Kiev counter-offensive.
“We have seen good progress with the counter-offensive,” Blinken said in a statement as he welcomed his colleague Dmytro Kuleba. The purpose of his journey is to ensure that Kiev has everything it needs for the ongoing offensive.
“In the long run,” the goal is to strengthen Ukraine’s deterrence and defense capabilities, Blinken said. A renewed Russian attack like eighteen months ago must be prevented. In return, Kuleba emphasized good relations with the main ally. Together, the ministers honored fallen Ukrainian soldiers at a military cemetery on the outskirts of Kiev.
Blinken could herald new US aid
According to US information, a meeting was also planned with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. It is expected that Blinken will also announce new American aid to Ukraine during his visit, American media report unanimously. There was initially no official confirmation. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Wednesday that the aid would not affect the outcome of the “military special operation”.
Ukraine has been fighting off a Russian invasion for over 18 months, with massive Western support. More than three months ago, the Ukrainian army launched a counter-offensive.
