Firefighter Manfred Houdek (47) from Bad Ischl is currently dealing with two dramatic missions: Last Thursday he responded when six-year-old Leilah was crushed by a stone during a journey – all help came too late. But on Sunday he was able to save the life of a mother (40).
“Mom, mom!”, three children (eleven-year-old twins and a nine-year-old) screamed desperately for help when their mother (40) suddenly collapsed and became unconscious on Sunday while taking photos in the knee-deep Ischl around 1 p.m. in Pfandl, municipality Bad Ischl. According to the police, the Ischl currently feels like a temperature between plus 18 and plus 20 degrees Celsius.
In this area the river is about 50 centimeters deep. The 40-year-old had gone about five to ten meters into the river and wanted to take pictures of her children from this spot when she suddenly collapsed.
A human guardian angel
But the mother of three had a human guardian angel: Ischl electrician and firefighter Manfred Houdek (47) happened to be standing in the parking lot above. “I heard the children’s screams and ran over. The woman’s face was underwater and she was already completely blue. The three children held her so she wouldn’t be driven over the weir, but they couldn’t pull her out.”
Houdek immediately rescued the unconscious woman from the water and, together with his wife Veronika, provided first aid – she was on hand and is a trained nurse. The mother of three regained consciousness. She was taken to the local hospital.
