Iranian media showed images of tanks driving towards the border with Iraq on Wednesday. Apparently, the mullahs’ regime is now increasing pressure on its neighbor due to Kurdish separatist groups on Iraqi soil. According to reports, an ultimatum was also given: the Kurdish militias should be disarmed by September 19.
According to information from Tehran, Iraq took such a step in an agreement between the two countries at the end of August. The Islamic Republic accuses Kurdish parties and groups in northern Iraq of supporting nationwide protests in Iran in the fall of 2022. Then, as now, the security apparatus took harsh action against demonstrators, especially in Iranian Kurdish areas. Iranian forces have been regularly attacking targets in the neighboring country with missiles and drones since last year.
In 2022, Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, a man who received widespread support from Iranian groups, took over the leadership of the government in Iraq. The Kurdish areas in northern Iraq, on the other hand, are governed autonomously with their own parliament in the metropolis of Erbil.
