The area around the southern Italian city of Naples was shocked by an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.2 on the Richter scale on Wednesday morning. According to initial findings, there were no injuries or major damage.
The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) gave the magnitude 4.2 and located the epicenter in the Phlegraean Fields. This area of high volcanic activity has been affected by many small earthquakes for quite some time.
The yellow alert has been in effect for years
In August alone, 1,118 tremors were recorded around Europe’s largest active supervolcano. The area has been at yellow alert level for eleven years, which calls for caution.
“The bed has been moved”
The INGV said there has been increasing rumbling beneath the Earth’s surface since Monday evening. However, the earthquake around 3:35 am was the strongest in a long time and scared many people. “The bed moved, paintings and objects on the wardrobe fell down, everything danced. This time it was very strong,” one user wrote on Facebook.
Photos showed frightened people gathered on the streets. Train services to and from Naples were suspended for several hours and schools in the city of Pozzuoli had to remain closed on Wednesday.
