A few days before a looming budget freeze in the US, Democratic and Republican senators presented a compromise proposal for a short-term interim budget. US President Joe Biden is now going into attack mode.
The compromise released Tuesday would guarantee funding for federal agencies through Nov. 17. The proposal also includes around $6 billion (5.7 billion euros) in additional aid for Ukraine.
President Joe Biden asked Congress for $24 billion. The chances of success of the compromise proposal in the House of Representatives were initially uncertain.
The deadline is almost over
The US Congress must pass a new budget bill by midnight on September 30 to secure funding for federal authorities. If Republicans and Democrats cannot reach an agreement, there will be a budget freeze, the so-called shutdown. Hundreds of thousands of state employees will then have to be placed on unpaid leave and countless public institutions such as museums and national parks will have to be closed.
While Biden’s Democrats and opposition Republicans were able to reach an agreement in the Senate, the situation in the House of Representatives is much more difficult: the right wing of the Republicans, who form the majority in the Chamber of Congress, are attempting to block reaching an agreement.
Biden criticizes the Republicans
Last weekend, Biden blamed “a small group of extreme Republicans” for the looming budget freeze. He reached an agreement in talks with Republican Speaker of the House of Representatives Kevin McCarthy. “Now a small group of extreme Republicans do not want to abide by the agreement,” Biden criticized. “Everyone in America has to pay the price.”
