In the US, for the first time in history, the two most important positions in the Pentagon were given to black people. Gen. Charles Brown was sworn in Friday. He had openly shared his own experiences with racism in the military and in other areas of life in the past.
Former Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Charles Brown was sworn in Friday during a ceremony at the Myer-Henderson Hall military base in Virginia. He succeeds Mark Milley, who retired and was honored for his achievements.
Brown was previously the first Black person to lead a branch of the armed forces in his position. US President Joe Biden described Brown as a “first-class strategist” who had made a name for himself through his unparalleled judgment and uncompromising attitude. Biden thanked the outgoing Milley. He led “with a steady hand” through one of the most complex security situations the world has faced in a long time. Milley emphasized the importance of the Constitution, which must be defended “against all enemies – without and within.”
Nominated by Trump
The Chief of the General Staff is the military advisor to the U.S. President and directs the strategic planning of the Department of Defense. Brown had served as chief of staff of the Air Force since 2020 and was nominated by then-President Donald Trump. His successor Biden nominated Brown, born in 1962, as the new chief of staff in July.
Republican senator blocked confirmation
However, Republican Senator Tommy Tuberville has been blocking the routine confirmation of key personnel within the US military for weeks for ideological reasons – also delaying Brown’s confirmation. Hundreds of other appointments, usually voted on in groups, are still pending. Biden called on Tuberville to abandon his blockade position. It is “completely unacceptable” that more than 300 military officers and reservists are being kept in the dark.
Experiences with racism
Brown has openly shared his own experiences with racism in the military and in other areas of life in the past. After the violent death of African-American George Floyd during a police operation, he published a video in which he reported on his experiences – such as feeling constantly underestimated and having to work twice as hard to prove that the reservations against black people were are not applicable.
