After the dramatic rockslides on the Ruhehorn in the Silvretta in June, a huge rockfall has now occurred on the Falbesoner Knotspitze (3118 metres) in the Stubai Alps.
According to Thomas Fankhauser, the landlord of the Franz-Senn-Hütte in Neustift, the incident took place last week on the night from Thursday to Friday.
Huge rocks fell 200 meters
“From the ridge, across a width of about 40 meters, masses of rock suddenly thundered down about 200 meters into a gully before landing on a gravel field,” says Fankhauser. Fortunately there were no injuries. According to Fankhauser, the cause was likely that the permafrost was thawing.
The Knot Peak, located between the Franz-Senn-Hütte and the Neue Regensburger Hütte, is not accessible from this side in summer. In winter it is of course a popular ski tour. “But nothing can happen in the cold season,” reassures the hut owner.
Dramatic changes in the mountains
According to Thomas Rabl, chairman of the Association of Tyrolean Mountaineering Guides, the mountains are currently changing at a pace “like we have never experienced before”. It is therefore often necessary to create new, safe routes in the mountains. Risk management is becoming increasingly important.
