Climate activists from the group Just Stop Oil disrupted a performance of the musical “Les Misérables” in London’s West End. Five people were arrested on Wednesday evening, British police reported. The performance was canceled prematurely.
In a video that the Just Stop Oil group shared on platform X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday evening, activists can be seen on stage holding up orange banners with symbols and slogans of their group. They shout messages at the audience, who in turn respond with boos and insults.
Here you can watch the Just Stop Oil video.
Group: “Fossil Fuel Show”
The musical ‘Les Misérables’ (The Miserables), which the activists disrupted, is based on the novel of the same name by Victor Hugo about the former convict Jean Valjean in early 19th century France. Just Stop Oil wrote about X: “Valjean steals bread to feed a starving child. How long before we are all forced to steal? The fossil fuel show cannot go on.”
Following the incident, Wednesday night’s performance was canceled and the Shaftesbury Avenue theater was evacuated. The group, which is calling on the UK government to immediately stop issuing new oil and gas permits, continues to disrupt cultural and sporting events. Their goal is to draw attention to the climate crisis.
