Flu, RSV, etc. – The Ministry will advise vaccinations again in the autumn

Date:

The Austrian Ministry of Health advised on Thursday that in addition to Covid-19 and flu, other vaccinations should not be forgotten. For example, there are also vaccinations against RSV, pneumococcal (bacterial pneumonia) and whooping cough (whooping cough). However, the RSV immunization must be paid for privately and is relatively expensive at around 275 euros.

Approved for the first time this year, it is recommended for people aged 60 and over and pregnant women. However, the heavily advertised vaccination against Covid-19 is free; In case of flu, a deductible of seven euros applies. Doctor Maria Paulke-Korinek from the Ministry of Health advised on Thursday that protection against Covid-19 should now be renewed. RSV can be vaccinated at the same time or in November along with the annual influenza (flu) vaccination, with the season starting later.

Last winter, there was repeated talk of the “Tripledecmic” (“triple pandemic”) of Covid-19, influenza and RS virus, the doctor said. You can already recommend the RSV vaccination. In addition, the head of the vaccination department at the ministry spoke about the vaccines against pneumococcal and whooping cough.

Pneumococcal disease is serious in small children
A pneumococcal infection is a ‘disease that is serious in very young children and in older people’. The whooping cough vaccination is also given free of charge to children. Whooping cough is known as a childhood illness, but also as a “100-day cough” with symptoms lasting weeks until vomiting, Paulke-Korinek said.

The quadruple vaccine, along with diphtheria, tetanus and polio, must be renewed every ten years until age 60 and every five years thereafter. “Serious respiratory infections are among the most common causes of death,” says Arshang Valipour, head of the Department of Internal Medicine and Pulmonology at the Floridsdorf Clinic in Vienna. However, the majority can be avoided through vaccinations and a healthy lifestyle. Risk factors include insufficient exercise and smoking.

Doctors: “room for improvement” in terms of quotas
There is so much “room for improvement, as far as our vaccination rate is concerned you could fly into space,” the doctor said on Thursday.
