Germany’s Constitutional Court today approved mandatory coronavirus vaccination for all health personnel working in hospitals and clinics, permanent care centers for the sick and nursing homes. The judges of the highest German judicial body rejected a lawsuit against the article that considers this obligation in the new law to protect against infections.

Although the forced vaccination of these personnel threatens the physical immunity of those affected, the togados state that it is constitutionally justified to take measures to protect the most vulnerable population from serious infection. Mandatory selective vaccination is intended to protect the health of the elderly and the sick, who are at greater risk of contracting the coronavirus, members of the court in Karlsruhe, in the west of the country, emphasized.

Employees of care centers for the chronically ill and the elderly, but also clinics and hospitals, as well as public and private GP practices, as well as temporary service personnel such as midwives, ambulance and patient movers, massage therapists and physiotherapists had to prove until 15 March that they have been vaccinated with all necessary doses to be vaccinated against the coronavirus or that they have endured the disease.

Since March 16, all new health employees must present the relevant vaccination certificates. In the opposite case, the institution responsible for the recruitment must immediately inform the public health authorities, who can prohibit the persons concerned from entering their job and even practicing their profession. There are exceptions for those who cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons.
