Russian President Vladimir Putin on his 71st birthday received telephone congratulations from the heads of the allied states and held discussions on foreign policy.
The Kremlin chief spoke by telephone on Saturday with the presidents of Belarus, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan, as well as with the head of the government of Armenia. Putin had a personal meeting with Presidents Shawhawkat Mirsiyoyev (Uzbekistan) and Kassym-Shomar Tokayev (Kazakhstan).
The start of Russian gas supplies to Central Asian Uzbekistan via transit through Kazakhstan would be celebrated with a solemn ceremony. Putin’s contacts reported in state media are intended to show Russians that their country is not isolated despite the war of aggression against Ukraine.
20th anniversary as president
The state agency TASS wrote that it was Putin’s 20th anniversary as president – not including the four years in which he handed over the post to Dmitry Medvedev and still controlled Russia’s destiny as prime minister. Officially, it was said that Putin tended to celebrate his birthdays privately with family and friends.
Since 2006, Putin’s birthday has also been the anniversary of the death of journalist and Kremlin critic Anna Politkovskaya. She was shot dead by unknown assailants in Moscow. The background has never been clarified.
