The Conference of European Rabbis (CER) is shocked by the Hamas attack and calls for support for Israel. “Simchat Torah 2023 will go down in Jewish history as the darkest day since the Nazi Holocaust,” Chief Rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt said on Wednesday. He added: “Jews around the world are united in prayer and support for our brothers and sisters in Israel.”
He called on “all European countries to declare Hamas and all organizations that directly or indirectly support Hamas as terrorist organizations and to ban them,” the CER statement said.
“We call on all who value life and liberty to continue to support Israel as it enters the next phase of this war.”
Oberrabinner lives in exile
The CER represents approximately 1,000 members and 800 active rabbis “from Dublin to Vladivostok”. It has just opened its new headquarters in Munich. From there she “stands up for the religious rights of Jews in Europe”, for religious freedom and dialogue between religions. Goldschmidt was a former Chief Rabbi of Moscow and has been living in exile since 2011.
Hamas, classified as a terrorist organization by the US, EU and Israel, carried out the worst massacre of civilians since Israel’s founding with a major attack on the border area on Saturday.
The terrorists broke into towns on the Jewish holiday of Simchat Torah (Joy of the Torah) and searched homes for victims. They shot men, women and children and abducted others to the Gaza Strip. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed ‘revenge’.
