The decline in the number of births in Italy has continued uninterrupted for fifteen years: after a peak in 2008 with 576,659 births, the number of newborns gradually decreased. For comparison: there are now more than 183,000 fewer births (minus 31.8 percent).
More than 393,000 children were born in 2022, a decrease of 1.7 percent compared to the previous year. The trend appears to continue in 2023: according to preliminary data from statistics agency ISTAT, there was a decline of 1.9 percent in the first half of this year, which equates to 3,500 fewer births.
Leonardo and Sofia top the name rankings
Throughout Italy, people rely on tradition: the most popular boy’s name is Leonardo, followed by Francesco, Tommaso and Alessandro. Sofia, Aurora and Giulia were the most common baby girl names for newborns last year. In South Tyrol last year the most popular name for boys for newborns was Leo and for girls Emma.
The government led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is trying to increase the birth rate for next year as part of the budget law. This should primarily be done through tax relief for families.
