Just on Halloween night, there was an unregistered gathering of pro-Palestinian activists on Stephansplatz in the heart of Vienna. The police intervened rigorously and one demonstrator was removed.
Video footage showed about twenty demonstrators gathering on Stephansplatz to chant “Free Palestine” and “Allahu Akbar.” A demonstrator is pushed to the ground by several police officers and taken away a short time later.
“A disgrace”
In the video, a passerby can be heard in the background shouting at the protesters that they are “a disgrace”. They in turn accused the Viennese police of ‘fascism’ and sang the anti-Semitic battle cry ‘From the river to the sea Palestine will be free’. This alludes to the complete destruction of Israel and the people living there.
The Viennese police had mobilized extra troops for the coming Halloween night because they expected “a larger number of people in public places”. According to the State Police Directorate, in addition to the patrol service, officers from the special units Cobra and WEGA, as well as the service dog unit, the alien police and the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, will ensure the maintenance of “public peace”. , order and security”.
There are always demonstrations, but hardly prohibited
Pro-Palestinian protests have recently caused repeated unrest in Vienna. Not only did the demonstrators chant anti-Semitic slogans, some groups also saw fit to climb onto the monument to the Nazi victims within the Wehrmacht on Ballhausplatz.
So far, only one registered rally has been banned, namely the one at Stephansplatz on October 11 – which attracted hundreds more. A few days later, pro-Palestinian activists gathered in the city of Vienna.
