Anti-Semitic attacks keep France on edge. A Jewish woman was stabbed in her apartment on Saturday. The woman survived, but the perpetrator managed to escape – and probably scratched a swastika on the door of her apartment.
The crime could have been “committed with an anti-Semitic motive,” the prosecutor’s office in Lyon, France’s third-largest city, said on Saturday.
Swastika smeared on the apartment door
An investigation into attempted murder has been launched. The victim was attacked at home and his life was not in danger, the report said. No arrests have been made yet.
According to police sources, the crime took place around noon. According to the victim, someone rang the doorbell. When the young woman opened the door, a partially masked person stabbed her twice. The perpetrator then fled. A swastika was left on the door of the apartment.
Anti-Semitic acts are on the rise
“Such a wave of violence is indescribable. “All my support goes to the victim and his loved ones,” Mayor Grégory Doucet tweeted.
As in Germany, the war between Israel and the radical Islamic Palestinian organization Hamas has led to an increase in the number of reported anti-Semitic acts in France. Within three weeks, authorities registered more than 850 such acts.
Great nation concerned
Since France is home to both the largest Jewish and largest Muslim communities in Europe, the government is concerned that the conflict in the Middle East will spread to the country. In recent weeks, schools and airports in France have had to be evacuated repeatedly due to terrorist threats.
