Today’s Thursday marks the commemoration of the pogroms in November that the National Socialists carried out 85 years ago. The ceremony started with the laying of a wreath by Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen and the government leadership at the Shoah Name Walls. A memorial meeting will take place at the National Council at 5 p.m.
National Council President Wolfgang Sobotka (ÖVP) and the President of the Jewish Community of Vienna, Oskar Deutsch, will be present not only at the wreath laying ceremony, but also at the memorial service in Parliament in the evening. 95-year-old Shoah survivor Benno Kern will speak there as a contemporary witness.
Virtual reconstruction of destroyed synagogues
The President of the Israeli Knesset, Amir Ohana, also has his say via a video greeting. Through virtual reconstructions, participants can also get an idea of the destroyed synagogues in Austria.
A “light of hope” will shine later during a commemorative march of the Jewish youth of the IKG Vienna. “Light of Hope” starts at 7 p.m. at Heldenplatz and then moves to Ballhausplatz. After all, commemorating the November pogroms and standing up against anti-Semitism and hatred after the attack on Israel by the terrorist organization Hamas is more necessary than ever, an announcement said.
