Student stabbed – femicide causes wave of outrage in Italy

Date:

The case of a student whose boyfriend, an engineering student, was arrested as an urgent suspect near Leipzig has sparked outrage in Italy and brought the problem of violence against women to the fore. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni pledged to strengthen protection for women and raise public awareness. The case has caused discussions in the media and in politics.

“Every woman who is murdered because she is ‘guilty’ for her freedom is an aberration that cannot be tolerated and which urges me to continue on the path to end this barbarity,” said Meloni, the first female Prime Minister of Italy, in a statement. She explained that Italy’s Chamber of Deputies will vote on Wednesday on a bill expanding protections for women at risk, and announced a public awareness campaign against femicide.

Demonstrations in various cities
Women’s demonstrations took place in several cities on Monday, including Padua. The victim of the 22-year-old arrested man, a fellow student of the same age, was studying there. Demonstrations are expected in Rome and other Italian cities on Saturday to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. According to media reports, 103 women have been murdered in Italy since the beginning of this year, 80 of them by a partner or ex-partner.

The 22-year-old from the province of Padua was temporarily arrested on the highway near Bad Dürrenberg in Saxony-Anhalt on Saturday evening after being stranded on the emergency lane of the highway due to a lack of fuel. Italian authorities had been looking for the man for a week and there was a European arrest warrant for him. He is in a penitentiary in Halle an der Saale. The student and his ex-girlfriend had been missing for a week.

Student is extradited
Following the student’s arrest, the Naumburg High Court in Saxony-Anhalt will investigate his extradition to the Italian judiciary. The court announced on Monday that the timeframe until receipt of a corresponding request from the Public Prosecution Service and the further procedure are currently unclear.

The case has been making headlines in Italy for days. Surveillance camera footage showed the 22-year-old attacking the woman of the same age in the parking lot of an industrial area on November 12 and then fleeing with her in his car. His car was located in Lienz, among other places. On Saturday, the woman’s body with numerous stab wounds to the head and neck was found in a ravine near Lake Barcis in the Friulian province of Pordenone. Under the Italian legal system, the student could be transferred home in about two weeks.
