Hidden price increases, fraudulent labels and misleading advertising promises: supermarket shelves are full of foods that often do not do what they promise. Fortunately, there are independent organizations such as foodwatch Austria to make consumers aware of this and keep companies away from cheating. The NGO’s consumer advocates have launched another vote this year for the ‘Advertising Shame of the Year’. Consumers can vote online until December 10 for the most annoying marketing trick in the food industry, and the winner will be “awarded” with a prize.
Both EU food law and Austrian food law state: Consumers must not be misled by advertising or the presentation of products. The reality is different, as foodwatch Austria also knows. The NGO has set itself the task To expose grievances surrounding the marketing of food. People need to become aware of this, companies will face the criticism and be asked to make their products more consumer-friendly.
