Unsuccessful cabinet – Poland: PiS continues to postpone the election defeat

Date:

Nearly seven weeks after the victory of a three-party opposition alliance in Poland’s parliamentary elections, the national-conservative ruling party PiS is further delaying the transfer of power. But the mission is doomed to failure.

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki of the PiS, who was tasked to form a government by President Andrzej Duda despite his party’s defeat, announced on Friday that he would present his new cabinet on Monday.

Poland remains without a government
He still needs to clarify the date of the necessary vote on the government in parliament with the speaker of parliament. As a result of this maneuver, it could take until mid-December for the current opposition in Poland to take over the government.

In the October 15 elections, three pro-European parties led by former EU Council President Tusk won a clear majority of 248 out of 460 seats. There is now a coalition agreement. The PiS received 194 seats and has no coalition partner.

The president also belongs to the PiS
Despite this majority, President Duda, who himself comes from the ranks of the PiS, instructed the PiS politician Morawiecki to form a government. Opposition representatives accuse Duda of trying to delay the change.

The constitution stipulates that a proposed new cabinet must be voted on in parliament within fourteen days. Because the government presented by Morawiecki has no chance of winning a majority, his mission is doomed to failure. Only then would it be the turn of the current opposition to form a government.
