Austrians’ willingness to donate has once again reached a new record level: even 200 billion euros more than expected. The Styrians and Carinthians were the most generous compared to the federal states.
It is noteworthy that, according to the current 2023 donation report, the Austrians also set a new donation record last year. Last year, around 1.1 billion euros were donated to charities in this country: an increase of 26 percent. Child protection and animal protection, along with aid to Ukraine, remain the most popular topics for donations.
920 million euros from private households
Of this, no less than 920 million euros was donated by private households. Inheritance donations are also becoming increasingly popular. According to the report, one in nine donations comes from a charitable will.
Emergency aid to Ukraine was crucial
“150 to 200 million euros were given for aid to Ukraine alone – the decisive factor for the largest increase in donations here ever,” Günther Lutschinger, director of the Fundraising Association Austria, emphasized in a press release.
The middle class donates the most
The main source of donations comes from the middle class. About 96 percent of all donated contributions were less than 600 euros. In a comparison with the federal states, the Styrians and Carinthians were the most generous (148 euros per capita).
Smaller clubs could not benefit from this
At the same time, smaller nonprofits were unable to benefit from the record amount. “Many smaller clubs have clearly felt the impact of inflation and have already registered a slight decline,” Lutschinger warns.
The Fundraising Association Austria still assumes a decline of nine percent in its forecast for the coming year.
Non-profit package from 2024
Additional momentum is expected from the non-profit package that will come into effect on January 1, 2024 and which will make donations deductible for all charities for the first time.
